AIKEN, S.C.---You see them on the road all the time, but this month is dedicated to opening your eyes a little more to them. It's Motorcycle Awareness Month.

A deadly hit and run motorcycle accident late last week claimed the life of Jim Cohrs and injured Michael Younts, both of North Augusta.

Officers arrested Ginger Taylor Carpenter last Friday in connection with the death of Cohrs. She's facing charges for leaving the scene of a deadly accident, which is a felony. She's out of jail on a $25,000 bond.

TRANSCRIPT: Motorcyclists are out with a warning tonight this is motorcycle awareness month. and it comes on the heels of a deadly hit and run motorcycle accident last Thursday... which claimed the life of Jim Cohrs of North Augusta... and injured Michael Younts also of north Augusta. Jim Bronder has devoted almost 55 years of his life to letting people know how important it is to be safe when driving near or around motorcyclists. And sometimes getting his message out can be difficult. You talk about motorcycle awareness, can you find a sign on a highway anywhere for motorcycles? you wont find any can you find a poster for motorcycles? you wont find it. even deer. but do you see one for motorcycles... no. no.

Woman charged in hit-and-run
5/24/2008 12:49 AM

By KAREN DAILY

Staff writer

A Warrenville woman has been charged with the death of a North Augusta
man on allegations she was the driver of a 1997 Ford Expedition
involved in a hit-and-run crash Thursday that claimed the life of a
motorcyclist from North Augusta.

Police arrested 33-year-old Ginger Taylor-Carpenter Thursday evening
and have charged her with leaving the scene of an accident involving
death. She was taken to the Aiken County detention center where she was
booked and released Friday afternoon on a $25,000 bond, officials said.

Investigators say she was the driver of the Expedition that struck and
killed 56-year-old James Alan Cohrs of Rita Court in North Augusta
about 1 a.m. Thursday.

After several hours of searching the Aiken area for the vehicle and
driver Thursday, the S.C. Highway Patrol located the vehicle after
receiving a tip from a local caller.

Officials said it appears as if the vehicle struck a Harley Davidson,
driven by Michael Younts, 48, of Coventry Court in North Augusta, and
then drove 100 yards and struck the Harley Davidson that Cohrs was
driving.

Both men were traveling north on Storm Branch Road about 1 a.m. when
Younts, 48, was struck from behind. He was taken to an area hospital
where he was treated and released.

The same vehicle then struck and killed Cohrs,

He was pronounced dead at the scene, said Aiken County Coroner Tim
Carlton.

Preliminary autopsy findings show Cohrs died from severe head trauma.

Evidence gathered from the autopsy will be sent to the South Carolina
Law Enforcement Division for analysis, said Aiken County Coroner Tim
Carlton.

Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.

Toxicology is pending.

About 14 hours after the crash, the coroner and state troopers called
local media outlets to a press conference and began asking the public's
help in identifying the driver, and tip came in after that.

The motorcyclists had just left the Iron Horse Bar & Grill,
troopers said.

They were hit about four miles away from the bar.

Investigators search for suspect in fatal motorcycle hit and run

Investigators are asking for the public’s help identifying a driver who stuck two motorcyclists in Clearwater early Thursday morning, killing one and injuring another.
James Alan Cohrs, 56, of Rita Court in North Augusta, was the second motorcyclist hit by an unidentified driver on Storm Branch Road shortly after 1 a.m. He died from multiple body trauma. He was driving a 1985 Harley Davidson.
The first man struck, survived the crash, Michael Younts, 48, of Coventry Court in North Augusta. He was also driving a Harley Davidson.
Both men were traveling north on Storm Branch Road when Younts was struck from behind and left the roadway. He was taken to an area hospital where he has been treated and released.
Approximately 100 yards away, the same vehicle then struck and killed Cohrs.
He was pronounced dead a the scene.
Investigators had little information to release, but about 11 a.m. Thursday called local media outlets to a press conference, asking the public’s help identifying the driver.
Lt. Trey Stephens said troopers have recovered evidence and hope to release more vehicle information later in the day, but added that at the moment they are looking for a vehicle, possibly a pickup truck with heavy front end damage.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the hit and run was an intentional act.
The motorcyclists had just left the Iron Horse Ranch in Beech Island. They were hit about four miles away from the bar.
Investigators are still gathering evidence form the crash scene and talking with the surviving victim.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the S.C. Highway Patrol at 803-641-7657.

Jim Bronder has been our Chapter Coordinator but has recently needed to step down for health reasons. He has been a strong leader. He is honest, intelligent, reliable, approachable and always willing to listen to his members. I am sure we have all been proud to have him as our CC.
